May We

Maroondah Federation Estate, Ringwood.

May We is a group exhibition featuring 21 artists that reclaims the radical roots of Mother’s Day and May Day. It engages themes of gender-based violence, reproductive autonomy, fertility and infertility, and the constraints of rigid gender roles. Motherhood here expands beyond the human, encompassing care for non-human and more-than-human worlds, including our environmental responsibilities.

Motherhood is not fixed; it is continually shaped through acts of care, repair, and remembrance. My work, The Dance #4, explores the tension between maintenance and endurance within motherhood, where love is expressed through repetition rather than recognition. It renders visible the psychological weight of quiet, unseen labour - cleaning, tending, holding - that sustains others while remaining undervalued. By foregrounding domestic materials, I honour discarded objects as witnesses to maternal time, their irregular presence revealing the politics of home through imperfect yet enduring acts of care.
